An article in The Guardian raises some interesting questions about the motivation for foreign film panels Oscar submissions. Nigel Smith makes the point that all the Directors chosen produce singular work that’s often brazen and uncompromising. Compare that with the relatively safe films promoted by Hollywood. The European vs American Films chapter in Vibes From the Screen discusses this phenomenon.
I will be watching the reports from the New York Film Festival closely as well as later festivals to see how these selections fare in the U.S. compared to the reception they received in Europe. One thing is for sure. Art film lovers are in for a treat this year. Let’s hope that other filmgoers will take the opportunity to experience the depth of the art of film.
