There was much controversy over the International Competition’s jury selection of Sieranevada as Best Picture and Best Director recipients. Many pointed to other films that they regarded as being far superior. However, the jury is limited in its choice to those films that enter the competition and the majority of those other films elected not to do so. Only 15 of the festivals films were part of the International Competition. I saw seven of those and yes I saw at least three that I believe were more deserving than Sieranevada in both categories. Of the many people that I spoke with during the festival only one gave Sieranevada higher than a 3 out of 5 rating. (I gave it a 3) The consensus was that either the jury saw something that the festival viewers did not or the choice was political. The fact that the film has a 78 rating on Metacritic and a 93 rating on Rotten Tomatoes supports the wide discrepancies in festival opinion.
