THR reports that Cinema Sabaya, which screened at the 2021 Chicago International Film Festival and is Israel’s official submission for the 2023 Academy Awards in the best international film category, has been picked up by U.S. distributor Kino Lorber. This is an excellent, heartwarming film and well deserves full distribution. Kino Lorber plans a theatrical release in early 2023 followed by a multiplatform distribution.
“The film is a portrait of are tasked with filming their daily activities and routines. As they share their footage, barriers are broken down and the women learn about one another, as well as learning about themselves. Director Orit Fouks Rotem based her feature debut on her personal experience teaching a group of Arab and Israeli women participating in a documentary filmmaking workshop. The women, ranging from a devout Muslim mother to a single Jewish woman who lives on a boat, reflect the mosaic of contemporary Israeli society. As part of their workshop, the women are tasked with filming their daily activities and routines. As they share their footage, barriers are broken down and the women learn about one another, as well as learning about themselves.”
