Jennifer Lawrence is back doing her own style of acting and once again gives an understated but powerful performance. Her co-star Emmy and Tony Award nominee Brian Tyree Henry is equally impressive. Both play people damaged by extremel;y traumatic events. As Wendy Ide in The Guardian states “And it’s this – the unexpected bond between strangers who didn’t know they needed each other – that is the picture’s heart.”
This film is very subdued. It took me a while to “feel” the film, but once in the vibes came through and I could feel each of their pain. You know there is more behind what you see, but it is well hidden. Both actors convey a lot through their facial expressions and need little dialogue. They face their realities slowly.
There are few close-ups and the lighting although generally appropriate in telling the story gets tiresome in its back and forth. But then again maybe that is exactly what is happening in the characters as they struggle to fight through the dark memories.
I fear the actors will not get the appropriate recognition from their peers because of the film’s subdued telling. These days the emphasis is on the action movies.
