In 1952, the British Film Institute (BFI) Sight and Sound team started asking critics to name the greatest films of all time. The poll is taken every ten years, increasing in size and prestige as the decades passed.
The Sight and Sound poll is now a major bellwether of critical opinion on cinema and this year’s edition (its eighth) is the largest ever, with 1,639 participating critics, programmers, curators, archivists and academics each submitting their top ten ballot.
In the Critics Poll, Citizen Kane lead the for 50 years. In 2012 it was replaced by Vertigo. This year there is yet another change in the leader. Director Chantal Akerman’s 1975 film, Jeanne Dielman 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles has jumped to No. 1. Full list is at https://tinyurl.com/hxwcsv6n.
