The Wolf’s Call (2019) is a French submarine thriller that keeps you on the edge throughout. In my view it is better than the classic Hunt for Red October (1990). Led by experienced French actors François Civil, Omar Sy, and Mathieu Kassovitz, the acting while not superb is very believable and the actors play off of each other well.
Reviewer John Serba of the Decider pretty accurately described the film: “
The Wolf’s Call opens with a tense, thoughtfully executed 23-minute action sequence, and concludes with an even more complex and suspenseful 40 minutes of underwater strategy and warfare. The stuff in-between is all aftermath from the former and setup for the latter, and is just contextually realistic enough to be convincing. The screenplay doesn’t get too heavy with character development”
Camera work is a little weak and contains the obvious CGI scenes. The submarine sets provide the viewer with the intended claustrophobia and tenseness.
I was gripped and very pleased that I stumbled across this film.
