Perhaps the biggest news coming from Cannes for us viewers is that many of the buyers are reluctant to commit to new films for fear the various strikes will indefinitely delay financial return. In addition to supporting the Writers Guild, SAG-AFTRA, the actors guild has called for a strike authorization vote even though their negotiations have not yet begun. Others are coming. You will recall that I wrote on the potential upcoming problems a few months ago.
I am choosing not to write on who is signing up to star in what film at this time. It may not matter for quite a while.
As for the films shown at Cannes here is a brief summary:
Johnny Depp’s film Jeanne du Barry was the opening film of the festival. Although he received a 7 minute standing ovation, the film received mixed reviews.
Pedro Almodovar returns with another short film (1/2 hr.). Strange Way of Life with Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal in a half hour queer western. Overall = 4 stars
Occupied City– Steve McQueen’s moving meditation on wartime Amsterdam.
The monumental film which tracks day-to-day life in Amsterdam under Nazi rule asks hard questions of what we think about the gulf between past and present . The Guardian awards it 5 stars
Harrison Ford received standing ovation for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny but film got mixed reviews.
