This film opens in limited theater distribution and streaming on AppleTV+today.
The New York Times describes the film as “ONCE” with more feeling. It is a comfortable, satisfying film.
It follows Flora (played by Eve Hewson, daughter of U2’s Bono) , a single mom who is at war with her son, Max. Trying to find a hobby for Max, she rescues a guitar from a dumpster and finds that one person’s trash can be a family’s salvation.
The acting is good and convincing. The fades into Flora’s daydreams are sometimes a little clumsy but the occurence is realistic. The character development as the film progresses was excellent. The one weakness that bothered me was the lighting. It appeared as if everything was shot in natural lighting and therefore many shots were dark or cloudy. I presume that this was due to lack of funds. The music was primarily touching with some lively ones added. There are 18 original songs. The finale “High Life” will be submitted for the Oscar.
If you have trouble with Irish accents be sure to get the sub-titles.
Oscar submissions: The film will be submitted for multiple categories. It should earn a couple of nominations but I doubt any winners.
